Motor vehicle accidents are one of the leading causes of personal injuries in America. While some accidents occur because of unfortunate circumstances that are out of people’s control, many other crashes occur because someone has acted negligently. There are many reasons people cause accidents, whether they are drinking, or texting, or driving too fast, or doing something else that causes them to be distracted or careless. Regardless of the reason, anytime a motor vehicle accident occurs, it’s very likely that someone will be injured.
Recently, a serious car accident that occurred in Gardner, IL sent more than a dozen people to nearby hospitals with many types of injuries, including some that were reportedly life-threatening. According to officers on the scene, there were at least 16 vehicles involved in the crash, including a semitrailer. At last report, authorities had not determined the cause of the accident, but the investigation was still ongoing. Weather is believed to have been a factor.
Two people were taken to the Loyola Medical Center in Maywood with what were described as life threatening injuries. Meanwhile, according to reports, at least 11 other victims in the crash had non-life threatening injuries and were also taken to area medical centers. Authorities also said that emergency workers had to extract one person from a vehicle.
According to authorities 10 cars were initially involved in the pileup when emergency workers first arrived on the scene, but that the total number of vehicles quickly multiplied due to low visibility on the roads. While authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash or who was at fault, if they later determine that someone was responsible he or she could be facing charges as well as several personal injury lawsuits from the victims. Those who were hurt might want to speak with an auto accident lawyer.
When someone is hurt in a car crash that was caused by a reckless or careless driver, then the injured person may want to file a personal injury claim. However, sometimes, personal injury claims get caught up in the tangled web of insurance companies who don’t want to pay such claims. When that happens, the injured person can file a personal injury lawsuit. At Brassfield, Krueger & Ramlow, our Streator, IL personal injury lawyers know how to handle these kinds of situations.
