Police Investigate a Fatal FedEx Accident in Rockford

Illinois State Police is investigating a fatal FedEx accident that recently occurred on I-90 in Rockford. Reports state that a FedEx semi-truck struck a disabled vehicle at about 1:20 a.m. on Saturday, January 11th. One of the victims, a 30-year-old woman, was killed on-site after the semi-truck allegedly rear-ended her vehicle. According to police reports, the woman’s car had run out of gas, and she pulled over to the shoulder. Her four-year-old child, who was in the car at the time of the incident, survived the accident and has been treated for minor injuries.

Authorities are unsure of what exactly caused the crash. Usually, these crashes occur due to uncontrolled speeding on the part of the truck driver. The semi-driver, 48-year-old Douglas Powell of Wisconsin, has been cited for not reducing his speed to avoid an accident. The police have ruled out alcohol and drugs as potential factors in the crash.

Our Truck Accident Attorneys Help You Obtain Justice

Unfortunately, accidents involving semi-trucks are often catastrophic or even fatal. When driven at high speeds, these large, heavy trucks pose a significant danger to other vehicles on the road. The danger multiplies when one considers the continuously shifting, unreliable regulations trucking companies put on their drivers. Drivers are commonly pressured to reach their destination as quickly as possible, valuing speed over safety. Time and time again, this proves devastating to other drivers on the road.

Corporations can sometimes be held responsible for the actions of their truck drivers. These companies are expected to place registrations on their drivers to promote safety. However, when something goes wrong, some trucking companies may attempt to deny any accountability for the accident. Furthermore, some companies send an investigator to the accident scene and select only the evidence that gives them a better defense. This poses a challenge to the victims, whose lives are significantly altered by such a traumatic incident.
