How to Avoid an Accident with a Semi-Truck in Illinois

Every time you get behind the wheel of your car, you are putting your safety at risk. No matter how excellent your defensive driving skills are, the risks are still out there. The risk of injury dramatically increases when accidents involve large trucks, like 18-wheelers that haul heavy loads. It is imperative to understand some of the differences in these types of accidents, and what you can potentially do to reduce your risk of a collision.

If you or a loved one were involved in an accident with a large semi-truck in Illinois, you need to speak with our Illinois truck accident lawyers right away. At Brassfield & Krueger, Ltd., our legal team has years of experience representing injured clients after significant truck accidents.

Stay Out of a Truck’s “No-Zone”

The “no-zone” refers to a large truck’s blind spots on all four sides. These blind spots are quite large when compared to small cars. For example, on the rear of the truck, it could be as much as 30 feet, while the right side is nearly two lanes wide. When you drive in a truck’s blind spots, you increase your risk of an accident. You always need to remember to give trucks much more space than a passenger vehicle.

Be Cautious Where You Pull Over on the Highway

If you need to pull over on the road, make sure you do so in the widest shoulder area or a pull-off. Many large truck accidents involving passenger vehicles on the side of the road happen because the car is not pulled entirely off the road, and the truck swipes the vehicle as they drive by.

Never Pass a Turning Truck on the Right

Always use extra caution when you see a truck is turning. Do not assume that if a truck starts to pull left that it is safe to go around them on the right side. In fact, many trucks will need to pull left before starting their turn to clear the intersection. Always allow extra room, otherwise, you could find yourself crushed by the side of the truck as it starts making a turn.

Do Not Linger Alongside a Truck

If you are passing a truck, then do so swiftly. Aside from the issue of driving in their blind spot, trucks can have tire blowouts. When a tire blows, it could strike your vehicle and cause serious injuries.
